§         Lorsque deux choses arrivent en même temps

Kate is in the kitchen making coffee.
Kate is in the kitchen, she is making coffee.

§         Lorsqu’une action arrive durant une autre action. –ing est alors utilisé pour l’action la plus longue :

Joe hurt his knee playing football. Joe hurt his knee while he was playing football.

§         Après "when" ou "while" :

Joe hurt his knee while playing football.

§         Lorsqu’une action arrive avant une autre action, nous utilisons having (done) pour la première action :

Having found a hotel, we looked for somewhere to have dinner.

§         Nous pouvons également dire –ing après "after" :

After finding a hotel, we looked for somewhere to have dinner.

§         Lorsqu’une action de courte durée est suivie d’une action, elle aussi de courte durée, on peut utiliser une forme en –ing simple (doing à la place de having done) pour la première action :

Taking a key out of his pocket, he opened the door.

§         Dans les subordonnées de cause :

Feeling tired, I went to bed early (because I felt tired)
Being unemployed, he hasn’t got much money (because he is unemployed).
